Our story

Over nine years ago, Alessandro, one of our founders, discovered the immense potential of algae and their extracts during his master's thesis project. Initially, he
envisioned creating sustainable packaging, to be used as plastic alternative. Over time, while exploring new applications, his interest in well-being and the cosmetic field increased. Algae, with their rapid growth, ability to absorb carbon dioxide, and
lack of competition with human food resources and drinking water, represent a true treasure hidden at the bottom of the Ocean.
The use of algae to replace plastic has been investigated and implemented in the latest years.

At algaemie, we aim to reach a new milestone with their implementation in cosmetics formulation. Algae not only offer powerful beneficial effects on the skin but they can also provide unique texture and mechanical properties, being the perfect natural alternative to the mostly used silicones and synthetic polymers.

To bring this ambitious vision to life, Federico joined Alessandro. Since 2022, the first formulations, developed with rigorous scientific method, have been created and optimized. The main intent, from the very beginning, has been to offer a superior consumer experience, improving our products in collaboration with selected companies to ensure quality and originality. The uniqueness and innovative nature of our formulations have allowed us to collaborate with research institutions and educational entities.

Moreover, algae play a crucial role in cleaning seawater, removing pollutants and contributing to a healthier marine environment. They also produce oxygen, further benefiting our planet's atmosphere. Algae grow rapidly, providing a sustainable and renewable resource, and their cultivation does not require drinking water, conserving this precious resource for human consumption.
A key benefit of algae is their powerful extract, which promotes skin cell regeneration, mirroring the rapid growth observed in algae. This unique property makes algae an excellent ingredient in our skincare products, enhancing the skin's natural rejuvenation process.

Manufacturing process

Engineered in Switzerland: algaemie formulations are developed in collaboration with researchers operating in Swiss laboratories, combining the renowned Swiss precision with cutting-edge scientific innovation. Through a rigorous research and development process, high-quality ingredients are utilized to create top-range skincare products. The Swiss approach is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and the adoption of the latest technologies, ensuring effective and safe skincare solutions.

Made in Italy: production takes place in an Italian laboratory that integrates artisanal tradition with sustainable and innovative practices. This laboratory is renowned for its ethical commitment and use of natural and organic ingredients. Each phase of production is meticulously managed to ensure high-quality cosmetics. The laboratory employs recycled and recyclable materials for packaging, reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainability.

The production method merges traditional techniques with modern innovations, ensuring each product is not only highly effective but also environmentally friendly. Packaging

Our holistic approach to packaging reflects algaemie GmbH’s dedication to quality, safety, and environmental responsibility, ensuring that every aspect of the products is designed with care and consideration for the planet.

  • Primary packaging

    Airless Bottles made from recycled plastic offer numerous advantages in skincare packaging.

    • Product Protection: by eliminating air exposure, the product remains free from contamination and oxidation, preserving the efficacy of active ingredients and extending shelf life.
    • Precise Dispensing: each pump delivers an exact amount of product, enhancing user experience and reducing waste.
    • Extended Shelf Life: the vacuum system helps maintain the product’s freshness and potency over time, ensuring longer-lasting performance.
    • Hygiene: the sealed environment prevents bacterial contamination, which is crucial for maintaining the purity and safety of skincare products.

    We prefer recycled plastic to glass because it is a much lighter solution. This allows us to generate less carbon dioxide emissions during production and transport. However, we intend to use plastic collected from the oceans and biodegradable materials as soon as possible.

  • Secondary packaging

    Algae-Based Paper: the secondary packaging is crafted from algae-based paper, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability. This innovative material uses invasive algae species  that would otherwise disrupt the local ecosystems they grow in, turning them into a valuable resource. Our algae-based paper is recyclable, biodegradable, and produced with renewable energy, making it an exemplary model of circular economy. It reduces waste, minimizes environmental impact, and showcases a unique natural aesthetic with visible algae particles, embodying our commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Education

Future goals

At algaemie, we are committed to continuous innovation and sustainability. Our future goals include the following key areas:

  • Oceanic Plastic

    We aim to incorporate oceanic plastic into our packaging, but only when it can be done at a higher percentage and without using virgin plastic. We acknowledge that we are not there yet, but we are actively working towards this goal.

  • Solid Cosmetics

    We are developing solid cosmetics, ensuring that the quality standards of these products can be achieved by customers at home. While our progress is ongoing, we are dedicated to meeting these high standards before bringing these products to market.

  • Facial Sheet Masks

    We are working on creating facial sheet masks that contain no artificial components and can dissolve completely, providing a sustainable and effective skincare solution. This innovation is part of our commitment to minimizing environmental impact while delivering high-quality products.
